Google.org Joins the Fight to End Modern-Day Slavery with Grant to GoodWeave
December 14, 2011

Today Google.org announced a grant to GoodWeave as part of its first-ever dedication of funds to support the global fight against human slavery. In recognition of GoodWeave’s nearly two decades of leadership in the modern abolitionist movement, Google is supporting its market-based model to eliminate child labor from the handmade rug industry. "Not My Life" Broadcast on CNN
October 22–23, 2011 • 9:00 p.m.

Not My Life, a new documentary on human trafficking, was broadcast by the CNN Freedom Project. Filmed on five continents, Not My Life depicts the horrors of modern slavery. GoodWeave’s Nina Smith is among the organizations and individuals fighting to end the forced and bonded labor the film highlights. The documentary, which premiered at Lincoln Center in January, aired in two parts on October 22 and 23 at 9:00 p.m. in all the network's international time zones—reaching a global audience of some 275 million households.

New York International Carpet Show
September 11–13, 2011 • New York City

The 2011 New York International Carpet Show (NYICS), co-sponsored by GoodWeave, was held at 7 West 34th Street in the middle of Manhattan’s carpet district. GoodWeave members Asha CarpetsCreative MattersFlorence Broadhurst Rugs by Cadrys, Kooches, Lapchi, New Moon and Robin Gray Design exhibited at this international trade show. GoodWeave licensee and rug designer Amy Helfand spoke on the panel “Selecting the Right Carpet: From Contemporary to Classic to Custom,” for the September 12 installment of 7 W New York’s Designer Day series, presented in collaboration with the NYICS.

Faces of Freedom Photos Displayed at UN Exhibit in Geneva
September 1–27, 2011 • Geneva, Switzerland

The UN Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery (Trust Fund) chose photos from GoodWeave’s Faces of Freedom series to be displayed at the UN Headquarters in Geneva as part of an exhibition to mark its 20th anniversary.

Displayed during the 18th session of the Human Rights Council, the exhibit aimed to increase awareness of modern slavery -- including their root causes and consequences -- and of the work of the Trust Fund.

Faces of Freedom takes viewers behind the scenes of South Asia's carpet factories and inside the lives of the children in weaving communities assisted by GoodWeave. Click here to view the exhibition online.

GoodWeave is pleased to announce English Floral as the featured rug in its 10th annual raffle.

Every year, GoodWeave offers supporters a chance to win a luxurious certified carpet. Donated by long-time partner and esteemed designer Carini Lang, this prize rug is truly elegant.

Raffle tickets are $25 each, 5 for $100, 12 for $200, 30 for $500… and are available through October 24, 2011. The drawing will be held by GoodWeave—you need not be present to win.

In celebration of their first showroom opening, partner company Custom Cool hosted a raffle fundraiser to benefit GoodWeave.

Attendance at the event was not required to win the spectacular 8’ x 10’ rug which was raffled off for the occasion. Made of nettle and silk, “Ikat Heart” retails for $6,000. 

Raffle tickets were available for a $50 charitable donation. All proceeds benefited GoodWeave. Only 200 tickets were sold and online sales ended August 17.
