GoodWeave International is working to end child labour, forced and bonded labour in global supply chains. Having proved its effectiveness in the South Asian carpet industry over the past twenty years, the organisation is now expanding its operations to include other industries where child labour is prevalent, notably apparel and home textiles.

GoodWeave fulfills its mission by creating market demand in North America and Europe for products bearing its best-in-class certification label, monitoring supply chains, rescuing and educating child laborers, and providing support services for weaving families.

GoodWeave International is a nonprofit organization, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and affiliate offices in the UK, Germany, Nepal, Afghanistan, and India.

Position Description:

As GoodWeave enters an exciting phase of growth and expansion, this newly created position will play a pivotal role in helping the organisation make the most of new opportunities across Europe. Working in concert with GoodWeave International’s international secretariat, the Senior Business Development Manager (SBDM) will expand consumer and trade awareness of GoodWeave’s product certification and sign new European companies into the programme.

Working initially from a home office, the SBDM will design, develop and deliver a comprehensive strategic and tactical plan for business development, income generation and awareness-raising of GoodWeave’s market-driven approach within the EU. Key to the SBDM’s success will be building relationships with key brands – importers/wholesalers and retailers – by making the business case for ensuring child-labour-free supply chains. With creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit, the SBDM will document and share how companies can leverage GoodWeave participation as a tool to build brand loyalty, reach new customers, and increase sales.

This position will manage the current importer base that distributes GoodWeave certified rugs in Europe and develop new account relationships. Importer accounts include branded companies that design and import rugs from India, Nepal and Afghanistan. Retail accounts include individual stores and showrooms that sell imported rugs.

This position will strengthen existing relationships and increase industry participation in GoodWeave’s expansion programmes within the apparel, home textile and fashion jewelry sectors. It will have the support of the existing business development consultant, based in UK.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and successfully execute a strategy to increase the market share of GoodWeave-certified rugs within Europe.
  • Cultivate strong, productive relationships with importers and retailers that lead to growth with existing GoodWeave licensees and new licensing relationships.
  • Coordinate with the business development consultant and Director of Communications & Impact to support licensed companies with their communications relating to GoodWeave.
  • Represent GoodWeave at trade shows and industry events to educate the industry on labour issues and the organisation’s unique approach to achieving social justice through ethical business practices.
  • Keep Director, International Business Development informed on trends and client feedback and submit reports for internal and external information on market development in Europe.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of sales or marketing experience in consumer products.
  • Understanding of the business value of socially responsible supply chains, preferably with knowledge of international labour rights norms and approaches to measuring corporate compliance.
  • Demonstrated success as a Sales or Brand Manager, preferably in a textile-related industry.
  • Exemplary writing, business planning, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to “close the deal.”
  • Degree/diploma in business studies or related.
  • Willingness to undertake international travel, within and outside Europe.
  • Ability to thrive in an autonomous, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and possess a commitment to GoodWeave’s values and work ethic.
  • Native level spoken and written English and high proficiency in German desired.
