Dominique Browning Leads Slow Love Life Trip to India

Join Dominique Browning, author of Slow Love: How I Lost My Job, Put On My Pajamas & Found Happiness, on a Slow Love Life trip to India organized by Elevate Destinations. The 14-day-long trip takes participants through several cities, beginning with Delhi and including the wetlands of Shahpura Bagh, the tent city of Nimaj, and ending with a visit with royalty in Udaipur. Day trips include seeing artisans involved in block printing, rug making, and making blue glaze pottery.

After losing her job as editor-in-chief when House & Garden folded, Dominique was forced to reexamine her life and discovered the importance of slowing down, living consciously and not deferring dreams. Now she's realizing one of her dreams, to visit India, and inviting others along with her to share in the adventure of exploring an ancient and beautiful land.

Five percent of the net costs from the trip will go to GoodWeave. Dominique became familiar with GoodWeave through founding board member Stephanie Odegard. She chose GoodWeave to receive a portion of the proceeds because "there's nothing better than beautiful, handwoven carpets. I love the happy accidents that become part of each piece's individual beauty. As with anything handmade, I appreciate the story woven into a carpet; I like the idea that someone's heart and soul have gone into making it. Faces of Freedom Exhibit at the Department of State in recognition of World Day Against Child Labor

In recognition of World Day Against Child Labor, images from Faces of Freedom will be displayed at a conference on child labor sponsored by the Departments of State and Labor, the American Federation of Teachers, No Limits Foundation, and the International Labor Rights Forum. The conference features speakers including Under Secretary of State Maria Otero, Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner, and Ambassador Luis CdeBaca. Attendees will have the chance to hear leaders in the human rights field discuss the best ways to combat child labor, through higher wages for adult laborers, economic incentives against child labor, and increased access to education.

The photographs will also be on display through June 14th in the Department of State’s exhibit hall.

Landry & Arcari Hosts Faces of Freedom in Boston and Salem, Mass.

From May 6 – 20, 2010, Landry & Arcari showrooms in Boston and Salem, Mass., will host the Faces of Freedom photography exhibit on GoodWeave’s solution to child labor in the South Asian rug industry. To complement the exhibit, Landry & Arcari will host a pair of events: An opening reception, on Thursday, May 6, at its Boston showroom, complete with weaving demonstrations, live traditional music and Nepalese folk dancers; and a family day, on Saturday, May 8, at its showroom in Salem. Parents are invited to bring their children to family day, where they will learn about the weaving culture through activities like coloring rug designs and weaving bracelets with the same wool used for rugs.

Landry & Arcari will also host a raffle for a hand-knotted Tibetan rug certified child-labor-free by GoodWeave. Entry is available in-store and online for a $25 donation, with all proceeds going directly to the GoodWeave program. GoodWeave Invites Public Comments on New Standard

In order to better serve children and families in carpet weaving communities and recognizing the need to adapt to consumer demand in the changing marketplace, the GoodWeave program is developing a new, more comprehensive set of requirements for its certification standard. This initiative reflects a growing recognition that the problem of child labor is deeply intertwined with those of adult working conditions and environmental stewardship.

All interested parties are invited to participate in the development of the new GoodWeave standard, through a public consultation from March 3 – May 1, 2010. A public summary and draft of the proposed new standard are available at GoodWeave.net/consultation, and interested parties are welcome to submit comments online, by email, or by mail. DC Green Festival

Faces of Freedom will be on display at the DC Green Festival, held October 10 - 11 at the Washington Convention Center. The world’s largest sustainability event, the Green Festival boasts over 125 speakers and performers, and a sustainable marketplace of more than 350 booths. The exhibit will be located in the Fair Trade Pavilion, which celebrates products that care for both the human and natural resources used in their making.

A GoodWeave certified rug entitled Flora/Herbal Toss will be on display along with the exhibition, and will be available for purchase. The rug was designed by Silk Road Weaves, one of nearly 70 rug companies participating in the GoodWeave’s independent certification program.

Robin Gray Design hosted the Faces of Freedom photo exhibit on solutions to child labor in the rug industry from April 27 through May 1, 2009 at its newly opened Carpet and Rug Studio in Santa Fe. Gray’s “rugs less ordinary” offer inspiration from her interests as a weaver, textile artist, architect and world traveler.

Iqbal World Premiere, The Children's Theater

The Children's Theatre Company, the largest children's theater in North America, hosted Faces of Freedom in the lobby throughout the running of the play Iqbal, the real-life story of a Pakistani carpet slave boy. Iqbal was rescued at the age of 10, then awarded the Reebok Human Rights Award for his activism. Lauded as a hero by the human rights community and fellow children still toiling on carpet looms, Iqbal was also perceived as a threat to a certain industry faction. On Easter Sunday in April 1995, Iqbal was murdered while riding his bike in his hometown. Over a decade later, the case remains unsolved.

International Contemporary Furniture Fair

The 19th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair May 19-22, 2007 will transform New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center into the global haven for design devotees. More than 600 exhibitors will display contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, and kitchen and bath for residential and commercial interiors. RugMark licensees including Amy Helfand, Bennett Bean Studio, Delinear, emma gardner design, and Liza Phillips will attend and showcase their latest designs. RugMark staff will be on hand to support these members.

During the Fair's four days, 145,000 net square feet (14,500 net square meters) of the Javits Center will bustle with more than 23,000 interior designers, architects, retailers, designers, manufacturers, representatives, distributors, and developers. Members of the general public are welcome on Tuesday, May 22 when the ICFF is open to all comers.

The Odegard Award for Excellence in Rug Design

Designer Stephanie Odegard, of Odegard, Inc., introduces The Odegard Award for Excellence in Rug Design. Addressed exclusively to students in the field of the arts, Odegard is inviting design students of over 150 U.S. colleges and universities to submit original carpet designs. In addition to a $2,500 cash prize, the winning design will be made into a hand knotted carpet and become part of Odegard’s collection for three years. The competition is open to students engaged in courses of artistic and design study as of October 1, 2006 and will be judged by industry luminaries including Dr. Barbara Bloemink, Sherri Donghia, Holly Hotchner, Jack Lenor Larsen, and Stephanie Odegard. Applicants are encouraged to offer designs with inspiration that reflect the spirit of the Odegard mission by unifying marketability and visionary aesthetic with traditional weaving methods. The rug designs will be judged on the merits of artistic execution and the originality of their design vision combined with the use of natural materials. Submissions must be received by March 15, 2007.

South Asian March Against Child Trafficking

Kicking off February 25th, the South Asian March Against Child Trafficking will spread awareness on the issue of trafficking for forced labor. The march, with is the beginning of a large-scale awareness campaign targeting potential victims, will cover approximately 2500 kilometers and multiple villages across the Indo-Nepal-Bangladesh border before culminating in Delhi on March 22nd, 2007.

Stephanie Odegard, founder of Odegard, Inc, will speak about her work to eradicate child labor in the handmade rug industry; Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights will discuss their education program in the country.
