Spotlight On: Stephanie Odegard Collection

New York, New York

Stephanie OdegardStephanie Odegard Collection was the first U.S. company to join GoodWeave® and continues to set the standard for social responsibility. Founded by Stephanie Odegard, a recognized leader in contemporary design, the company credits its success to the twin pillars of good business and good deeds.

Stephanie's career has been dedicated to social concerns, from her roots in international development to her current status as an icon of sound business practice. Starting as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1970's, Stephanie spent 12 years working with developing nations. From Jamaica to the South Pacific, Stephanie helped countries preserve their local cultures and handicrafts as they joined the global economy. In 1987, she first visited the carpet factories of Nepal as a consultant for the World Bank in order to help the country's emerging rug industry offer a better life to more people.

Through this work, Stephanie developed relationships with Nepal's most reliable rug suppliers, relationships that soon grew into a new business. "By the time I left, I had discovered a quality of hand-knotted Tibetan carpet that no one had made for commercial purposes before," she says. She paired her sophisticated and subtle design expertise with the high-end handmade product, and her company was born. Just when she thought her years of globetrotting were nearing an end, Stephanie began importing specially produced carpets of her own design into America. Today, Stephanie Odegard Collection is a multi-million dollar business whose products are the definition of distinctive handmade rugs.

Stephanie remains insistent on producing luxury consumer goods according to a vision of social progress, and all of Odegard's products adhere to strict standards of social responsibility. As a founding board member and major patron of GoodWeave, she leads the handmade rug industry by example. All Stephanie Odegard Collection carpets woven in Nepal carry the GoodWeave label, and Stephanie has inspired many fellow importers to become GoodWeave partners.

Stephanie has won numerous awards for her design talents and commitment to social progress, including honors from Aid to Artisans, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, House & Garden, and the National Peace Corps Association. Stephanie Odegard Collection rugs are consistently chosen for the world's most exclusive interiors, such as the Greenwich Hotel in Manhattan, several Ritz-Carlton hotels and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Stephanie credits these honors partly to her relationship with GoodWeave, which ensures that only skilled adult artisans weave Odegard's rugs. "People will tell you that fine knotting for rugs requires small hands," she says. "That's a falsehood. Fine knotting requires strong hands." How does she know? For nearly 25 years and counting, Stephanie has been one of the strongest hands in the business.
