Spotlight On Importers/Rug Designers
- malene b
-

- From the beginning, Malene Barnett knew she would only use child-labor-free manufacturing facilities. "I'd seen the conditions in factories overseas, and the little children going to work, so I wanted to be part of an organization that shares my values," she says. When she read about GoodWeave, she said to herself, "This is what I want to be a part of."

- I + I src
-
- In Iyaric, the dialect of English used by Rastafarians, “I and I” is a phrase that refers to the absolute oneness of two persons, the oneness of all humanity. So isn’t “I + I” an odd name for a stylish, Italian, multi-disciplinary design company specializing in limited edition furniture, objets d’art for the home, and conceptual and minimalist handmade rugs? “Absolutely not!” says I+I co-founder Paolo Giordano.

- Nepal Rugs and Carpets
-

- John London of Nepal Rugs and Carpets says that, from the first, he wanted to appeal to clients who would appreciate handmade Tibetan rugs that are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also completely "green." Given his love of natural products, his deep concern for the environment and his desire to end child labor in the rug industry, John sought GoodWeave certification. - Sacco Carpets
-

- Marc Sacco, founder of Sacco Carpet, has traveled the world to all the major rug-weaving centers and has seen the working conditions and the problems of weavers in third world countries. He believes that it's one thing to prevent children from weaving rugs, and quite another to fund education programs for these children and return money to their communities for their protection. That, says Marc, is what sets GoodWeave apart—and it's why he's proud to be a member.

- In 2001, while working and studying in Kathmandu, Salman Khan and Kerry Smith envisioned a revolutionary approach to carpet-making, premised on the desire of customers for freedom of expression in designing their living and working environments. They named their venture Lapchi―Tibetan for "abode of creative energy"―and partnered with GoodWeave to assure customers that their highly customized design is accompanied by the best labor practices.

- Rug Art
-

- "We had more guts than experience," laughs Sigal Sasson when she talks about the leap she and her husband took in opening Rug Art eight years ago. Their guts and talent have paid off. With two showrooms in California and others in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Florida, Rug Art designs some of the most sought-after rugs in the industry. Joining GoodWeave was an easy choice, after they visited a GoodWeave school. "Once we saw those kids, we just looked at their faces and then at each other and said, 'Let's do it.'"

- After a 25-year career in fashion and textile design, Bev Hisey decided to produce handmade rugs in India—but the shift from producing in Canada to India presented an ethical challenge.
