From its London and New York locations, M & M offers traditional Oriental rugs, custom-made designer rug collections and custom-produced area rugs. In addition to custom designs, the company's membership in the GoodWeave certification program helps to set it apart.

Beatrice Girelli of IndiB brings to her rug venture the same passion for perfection that made her an award-winning hotel designer. IndiB rugs are made entirely of New Zealand wool and are touted as totally green. They are also 100 percent ethically produced, which for Beatrice means child-labor-free. "We absolutely don't want to be in the business of selling beautiful rugs made in ugly conditions," Beatrice says. "That's why we aligned ourselves with GoodWeave, a program with our values."

Judy Ross Textiles

Textile artist Judy Ross discovered the ancient art of chain stitch embroidery in Kashmir in 1989 and was inspired to transfer her drawing ideas to fabric and yarn. Since then, Judy has developed a special relationship with the artisans that craft her company’s handmade rugs. Experience in South Asia also led to Judy's partnership with GoodWeave, through which she can contribute to the education of children in artisan communities who often cannot afford school.

Founders Shalini Acharya and Simmy Pappachen joined GoodWeave's certification program to give back to the communities that keep alive the time-honored tradition of handmade rug weaving.

Shakeel and Rashid Ansari of Mat the Basics represent the third generation of a family with a long history in the rug industry and an enduring commitment to improving conditions for weavers. Now very much a part of the Los Angeles design scene, the company began in India in 1942. It has partnered with RugMark, the organization that carries out the GoodWeave certification program, for over 10 years. As Shakeel says, "This was one issue which I felt from my heart."

Creative Matters

Two decades ago, neither Donna Hastings nor Carol Sebert, founders of Creative Matters, imagined they would be known throughout the world for custom handcrafted rugs. Each woman started in a different direction—Donna in fashion design and Carol in textile art – but they shared common principles.
